Just a month ago, I reported here that Hawaii's two largest air carriers ranked in first and second place for on-time performance in July of 2007. Hawaiian Airlines flights were on time 94.7% of the time in July, and Aloha Airlines arrived on time 91.5% of the time. This was all the more impressive because in July 2007, the U.S. airline industry's overall on-time performance was rated the 11th worst in history. Now the numbers for August 2007 have been issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Hawaii-based air carriers once again took the number one and number two spots for best on-time performance. This this time they reversed positions, but both carriers improved their performance over the previous month. In August, Aloha Airlines was on time an impressive 97.0% of the time, while the on time arrival rate for Hawaiian Airlines was 93.6%. Southwest Airlines came in third, with 77.7% of arrivals on time.
At the other end of the spectrum, Atlantic Southeast Airlines registered the worst on-time performance for August, at 55.0%, followed by United Airlines at 66.2% and Alaska Airlines at 67.1%.
As a group, airlines in the United States improved their on time performance a bit, from a dismal 69.8% in July to 71.7% in August. The rate of flight cancellations for August also improved over July's numbers.
