There is NO QUESTION that plane should have landed IMMEDIATELY with such significant command and control problems. That the pilot did not do so is beyond comprehension - it would be reckless endangerment to continue flight in such conditions. I seriously doubt this reports veracity - no one entrusted command of a 757 would make such an egregious error of judgment.

I was on an AA 757 flight from JFK to LAX on Aug 1...

I was on an AA 757 flight from JFK to LAX on Aug 19, 2008. The pilot turned the plane on and the plane went totally dead, he tried again and again and said we had to get rid of the APU unit, they turned the plane on again. It still failed. I love to see JOE THE PLUMBER types pretend they know what happened and what the Captain should have done.

What would have happened if the Captain decided to land as soon as possible and went into a thick overcast cloud bank right when his battery quit on him? 30 minutes is not enough time to do the checklist, find a suitable airport, figure out how to navigate to that airport without navigational aids, and get the airplane on the ground. The airplane would likely crash if he fly thru clouds with no battery power. The pilot was most likely looking for a place to land that had no clouds. I have often times seen it where the entire Midwest is overcast with clouds.

Give the pilot some credit here and quit trying to second guess something about which you are completely uneducated about.
